  1. The Muffler

  3. The combustion of
  4. fuel in the
  5. cylinders is a
  6. series of carefully
  7. orchestrated small
  8. explosions.  These
  9. explosions create a
  10. tremendous
  11. pressure, because
  12. of the expansion of
  13. gas during the
  14. firing cycle, and a
  15. lot of noise.  The
  16. muffler's job is to
  17. reduce the noise
  18. from the exhaust. 
  19. In order to do
  20. this, the muffler
  21. is built with a
  22. series of metal
  23. plates with holes
  24. in them.  The
  25. exhaust gases are
  26. slowed down passing
  27. through these
  28. plates, and the
  29. noise level is
  30. reduced before the
  31. gases continue out
  32. through the
  33. tailpipe.

  35. To withstand the
  36. enormous pressures
  37. of combustion, as
  38. well as the high
  39. temperatures, the
  40. muffler must be
  41. solidly built,
  42. usually of
  43. corrosion resistant
  44. steel.

  46. The catalytic
  47. converter is
  48. usually placed
  49. closer to the
  50. engine than the
  51. muffler, in order
  52. to be effective in
  53. reducing the level
  54. of noxious gases.
